Industry glossary

Terms you will meet in the documents, systems and scenarios.

Certificate of electrical safety

The certificate a licensed electrician must complete after electrical installation work to declare that the work has been tested and complies with the Electricity Safety Act and the Wiring Rules.

Test for dead

Using a proven test instrument to confirm that every conductor to be worked on is de-energised after isolation, before work starts.

Shared neutral

A neutral conductor that serves more than one circuit, which can remain live when only one of those circuits is switched off.

Residual current device

A protective device that disconnects supply when it detects current leaking to earth, protecting people from electric shock.

Fault loop impedance

The impedance of the path a fault current takes from the supply through the active conductor and back through the earth, which determines whether protection will operate fast enough.

Refrigerant recovery

Removing refrigerant from a system into a cylinder using recovery equipment so that it is never released to the atmosphere.

Superheat and subcooling

Temperature differences measured at the evaporator outlet and condenser outlet that show how a refrigeration system is performing and whether the charge is correct.

String

A group of photovoltaic modules connected in series to produce the direct current voltage an inverter needs.

Export limit

The maximum power a network allows a solar system to feed back into the grid, enforced by an export control device.

Verification of competency

A workplace assessment confirming that a worker can perform a specific task or operate specific plant safely to the business's procedures.
